About 50 research and development partners representing the agricultural ministry in Senegal, the national agricultural research system, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, university and farmers’ associations attended the Field Day organized by the AfricaRice-Sahel Regional Station in Saint Louis, Senegal, on 20 June 2016. The organizations included ISRA, SAED, CIFA, DRDR, ISET, UCAD, PRODAM, CCBM, Symbiose, Syngenta Foundation, ASPRODEB and several farmers’ associations.
After a warm welcome by the AfricaRice Regional Representative in Senegal, Dr Kabirou Ndiaye, and his team of scientists based at the Station, the participants were given a guided tour of the farm at the Station, which is used both for research and training. They had an opportunity to see a wide range of irrigated rice lines including stress-tolerant and high-yielding inbreds and hybrids. They visited the biotechnology, grain quality, soil and agronomy laboratories.
The Field Day ended with an in-depth discussion where participants gave their feedback and recommendations. They were highly impressed with the new technologies and asked for quick access to the RiceAdvice decision-support tool developed by AfricaRice and its partners.
