Economy and Agriculture, African Union; Kanayo F. Nwanze, President,

The
Development Dialogues focused on several pressing issues:
- Prosperous, food secure and resilient livelihoods: How can staple crops contribute to food security for 9.6 billion in 2050?
- Healthier, innovative, capable and inclusive communities: Nutrition- and gender-sensitive agriculture and food systems: A foundation for sustainable development
- New partnerships for development impact: Resilient systems and communities towards sustainable development: Fostering the capacity to innovate
- Climate-change resilient agro-ecosystems: Integrated landscape approaches for agriculture, forestry and other land uses
A
forum on ‘Investing for impact’ preceded the main event. A major highlight was
the announcement of CGIAR’s commitment to focus at least 60 percent of its budget,
currently $1 billion dollars, on climate-smart agriculture. CGIAR pledged to
reach, with its partners, half a billion farmers with climate-smart
innovations.
The
Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice), which is one of the 15 international
agricultural research Centers that are members of the CGIAR Consortium, took
part in the event. The Center was represented by its Board Chair Dr Peter
Matlon, Interim Director General Dr Adama Traore and Director of Partnership
and Capacity Strengthening Dr Samuel Bruce-Oliver.
Under
the framework of the CGIAR Research Program on Rice – known as the Global Rice
Science Partnership (GRiSP) – AfricaRice seeks to develop environmentally
friendly rice-based production systems that respond to the challenge of climate
change and increasing water scarcity across rice ecologies.
AfricaRice’s
2015 calendar focusing on climate-smart rice innovation for Africa was unveiled
by Dr Kanayo Nwanze, IFAD President and former Director General of AfricaRice.
The calendar was presented to eminent personalities participating in the
Development Dialogues.
